10 Must-Haves When Camping with Kids: Essentials for a Fun-Filled Outdoor Adventure

My husband and I LOVE camping, but we recently tried something brand new this summer: camping with our two year old. This was the first time we did it, and we carefully planned and packed to make sure it was fun for everyone.

  • We stayed close to home: Rather than taking our first trip to the mountains or after portaging a canoe, we decided to stay only a little over an hour away. I wanted to be able to get home in a jiffy just in case she had difficulty sleeping or things became too miserable for the three of us at 2AM.
  • We planned around her nap: We wanted her to take a short nap on the way to the campsite, that way she was well-rested enough so she wouldn’t be grumpy or a puddle of tears, but she would be tired enough for bed at a reasonable time.
  • We only planned for camping one night to play it safe.

What to Bring Camping with Kids

When planning a camping trip with kids, having the right gear and essentials can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. From safety items to entertainment options, I’ve compiled a list of ten must-haves that will help you make lasting memories while camping with your little adventurers.

Spacious Tent

Invest in a tent that offers ample space for your family. You don’t need one with multiple rooms or a separate area for the kids (that brings its own headaches), but you will want one with enough room for sleeping and maybe even some games if it ends up being rainy or too buggy. Ensure it’s easy to set up, and bonus points if it is the type that’s extra dark for sleeping so you don’t have to wait until 10pm to put the little ones down!

Sleeping Gear

Make sure each family member has a comfortable sleeping setup. Invest in sleeping bags suitable for the weather conditions and I highly, highly recommend additional padding or inflatable sleeping mats for extra comfort. This one is similar to the mat that I have used for the past five years. Don’t forget pillows too and plenty of extra blankets in case it gets cold or you want an extra layer between the ground and your sleeping bag.

We also brought an inexpensive pack and play for our daughter, which kept her contained, comfortable, and it was also something she was already used to sleeping in on occasion. We’ll definitely be doing that again!

Camping Chairs

Having portable camping chairs are essential for creating a comfortable dining and relaxation area. Kids will appreciate having their own child-sized camping chairs to sit on and a designated spot for meals, games, and crafts. This is our favorite kid’s chair/booster seat combo!

Camp Kitchen Essentials

Pack a well-equipped camp kitchen that includes a camping stove or grill, pots, pans, cooking utensils, plates, bowls, and cutlery. We like to bring everything in a wash tub for easy cleaning afterwards. Don’t forget a cooler for keeping perishable food fresh.

First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is essential for any camping trip, especially when kids are involved. Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, burn relief gel, insect repellent, sunscreen, tweezers, and any necessary prescription medications. Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures to handle common camping-related injuries. Side note, here’s a fun deck of cards with survival and first aid tips throughout that serves a few different purposes. šŸ™‚

Lighting Options

Ensure you have good lighting options to navigate the campsite during night. Headlamps or flashlights are practical choices for both adults and kids. We love this collapsible solar lantern to use as a nightlight while we’re sleeping and this one (it’s brighter) to use for moving around the campsite or finding the toilet in the dark. You might even consider string lights or lanterns to create a cozy and well-illuminated camping atmosphere.

Entertainment and Activity Supplies

Keeping kids entertained during camping is crucial. Pack a variety of outdoor toys, such as balls, bubbles, yard games, frisbees, and kites for downtime at the campsite. Don’t forget to bring card games or books for a nighttime activity or if it ends up being rainy. We planned a few short hikes during our camping trip, so we also brought hiking boots and our baby carrier for hiking (something we got from our local Buy Nothing Group!). My husband also always brings his fly fishing gear when we are camping.

Wet Weather Gear

Prepare for unexpected rain showers by bringing waterproof gear for the whole family. Pack raincoats, ponchos, waterproof shoes, and extra clothes to keep everyone dry and comfortable. This is another reason why I always recommend a roomy tent!
