7 Things To Do During Your Layover in Seattle

This week I was flying to Alaska from Minneapolis and I had a fifteen hour layover in Seattle. It was impossible to find a flight that was straight to Fairbanks from MSP, and most of the flights had two or three short stops. I opted for one long layover that way I could leave the airport and spend a day in Seattle.

If you are planning a long layover or a short trip to Seattle, here are some essential things for you to do:

  • Pike Place Market– It’s touristy, but it’s still fun to walk around. When I was there this week, there was a guy doing free wine tastings. There are also great shops and restaurants within walking distance, including Cloud 9 Brewery, Pike Place Chowder restaurant, Biscuit Bitch, Rachel’s Ginger Beer, etc. You can see the mountains from there. Of course, the original Starbucks is also right across the street.
  • Gas Works Park– This is a nice area to walk around and good views of the city skyline and the space needle. If it had been warmer, we would have paddle boarded in the lake on that park as well.
  • Brown Family Vineyards— Wonderful wines, beautifully designed shop, and relaxing atmosphere. My friend ended up becoming a wine club member while we were there and our $10 tasting fees were waived. The tasting room in Seattle is in Pioneer Square, which is a trendy area with coffee shops, restaurants, and art galleries.
  • Elliot’s Oyster House– Large patio with great views of the Puget Sound. They had delicious chowder, crab, and crab cakes. I’m not a huge fan of oysters, but this is also something they are known for & we tried. The restaurant is located on the pier, so it’s a lovely area to walk around in.

  • Ivar’s Chowder– The only thing you should ever get is chowder.
  • There are several fantastic day hikes around Seattle that I wish we could’ve done. Next time it’s a must!
  • Coffee– My favorites are Slate Coffee Bar, La Marzocco Cafe, and Elm Coffee Roasters.
  • What other things do you recommend in Seattle?
