Northwoods Weekend

Northwoods Weekend

Gifting is not my “love language,” but I do love planning surprise trips. For different holidays or birthdays, my husband and I enjoy planning trips for one another. For Christmas last year, I rented an Airbnb cabin up in the north woods of Wisconsin. That Airbnb was only about $150 per night, and it was a perfect little secluded weekend getaway. We drove up to and spent one night there.

I was pretty proud of myself– I went to REI and rented two pairs of snowshoes so that we could snowshoe around the trails at the cabin. Before that, I had never tried snowshoeing and it was easy to get the hang of.

After snowshoeing for a bit in the evening, we went back to the cabin. I brought groceries and a cooler to make shrimp and corn chowder that evening and a bottle of wine. We listened to “A Prairie Home Companion” (first time I had ever listened to it) and played checkers after dinner.

The cabin also had a great little jacuzzi and plenty of board games, and no cell phone service. It was nice to get away, and the whole weekend cost around $250 including the rentals, cabin, food, etc. It was one of our cheapest getaways, and definitely one of our most memorable trips.

Weekends away do not have to be expensive or flashy. This one was relaxing and cozy, and it was an opportunity to enjoy the snow and winter months more. We are hoping to do this again this winter, but to try cross country skiing next time.

There are hundreds and hundreds of adorable, cozy cabins on websites like Airbnb or VRBO. Try to take a weekend this winter to disconnect from social media and work and relax!

UPDATE: We did this again this year, but we stayed at this cabin instead. It’s a bit closer to the twin cities, and it has a hot tub. 🙂
